Joining Sentences - Tutorial
Here are two simple sentences:
僕は十四才です
僕はヌジランド人でう
But what if we want to join these together? Currently, they’re two separate sentences. We’ll have to adjust some parts of them to do that first. Let’s see our sentences again, but with some colouring:
僕は十四才です
僕はヌジランド人でう
So the beginning of the sentences are in green, while the ending are in blue. We’ll need to remove some of these coloured parts. So, let’s put both sentences together, with the colouring:
僕は十四才です僕はヌジランド人でう
That doesn’t make sense, if you’re combining the sentences. See the SU at the end of the sentences, in blue? We need to remove one of them. We also need to remove the BOKU in green, too. Let’s do that.
We’re getting there! Finally, we need to remove the WA in green too.
Now we remove the colouring...
And...we’re not done. What’s missing?
A FULL STOP!
I hope you enjoyed this little guide, and that it helped you and made sense. Carry on to view combining sentences by adding BUT into it.
Japanese
Joining Sentences with a but.
As seen above, you’ve joined two sentences. In English, you’d say AND when switching from one sentence to the other. But what if it’s better to use BUT? How does that work? Let’s take two more sentences, colour them, and put them below.
So, our two sentences read: I like supermarkets, and I don’t like tomatoes.
Usually we’d put a BUT in the middle, right?
Right.
So, we’ll remove the usual stuff, and put the one sentence below:
僕はすうぱあすきでトマトすきじゃなにです。
Okay! One more thing. We need to add ‘BUT’ so after the lonely DE, put a GA.
Well done! That now reads: I like supermarkets but I don’t like tomatoes.
I hope you enjoyed this little guide, and that it helped you and made sense.
